Amethyst

Amethyst is the color of spiritual wisdom and one of the most powerful stones for intuitive practice. Not only does it help balance, calm, and focus the mind, but it aids in cleansing, purification, and protection. Its name comes from the greek for ‘not intoxicate’ because it was believed to give one the mental fortitude to be impervious to drunkeness.

It is also the last of the four stones that I consider essential to tarot reading—the others being the three stones I already talked about: quartz, rose quartz, and citrine. When reading the cards it helps to have the clarity of quartz, the love of rose quartz, the peace and openness of citrine, and perhaps most importantly the inner wisdom of amethyst. Sometimes for more taxing readings I’ll put one of each in the four corners of my altar cloth to help me focus. Of course this is just my personal preference, everyone has different stones that speak to them, and sometimes the occasion calls for something else.
