Deck Companions

Deck Companions

Over the last year or so I’ve gotten to know my deck pretty well as it exists in a physical space. Needless to say, I already knew it well in an intangible sense, but seeing how it plays with others has been a real joy and inspiration I didn’t expect. These are a few of the decks I use in tandem with The Prism Tarot.

Species by the Thousands

My favorite decks are often those I just end up with by chance, this is one of them.

I love using stones in my Tarot practice. Actually, they were my first love, before I even got into Tarot. That influence is clear in my work, as evidenced by Amanda's review of the deck @indiedeckreview. She put into words some things that were just inherent for me that I never verbalized.

It’s a satisfying deck to work with, alone and paired with others.

I’ve spent more time reading and researching prisms while working with this deck than I ever have in my life. Liz includes a bit about that, and her intentions with this deck, in her lwb.

Most of the time that I work with this deck I feel like bringing out my stone folk. Today was labradorite, and I brought out all of my big pieces. I wonder if they’re speaking the same language, these stones and these cards. It’s the strangest thing. I speak Tarot (fluently) and I speak Stone (very well) and these cards read like stone.

There’s a firmness to them, a sharpness, a resonate voice that speaks truth and I am having the best time trying to work that out.

That's part of the magic of the relationship between artist and consumer. The true meaning of a work can only be expressed when it's experienced by others.

When I want to pull stones for a reading there are a lot of options and sometimes I need a little help deciding what energy I need to tap into, so I pull a card from this little crystal oracle deck for a direction. It's the perfect visual companion to The Prism tarot because of its simplicity and soft rainbow of colors.

Essential Tarot by Pablo Montt

To me, this deck and my own interact like long lost friends. The white and rainbow color scheme and star filled backgrounds are an obvious connection, but Montt's deck breaks the symbolism down to the "essentials" in an elegant way that feels like it puts a small, focused frame around the feeling I was trying to convey. So when the messages of a reading feel too big or overwhelming I often reach to this deck for clarity and smaller bites to chew on. There are no hard edges to be found in this deck. I like looking at it before bed to give me peaceful thoughts to focus on and to invite the floating symbols to join me in my dreams.

Prism Night Playing Cards

Another great companion to The Prism Tarot is elephant playing cards' Prism Night deck. Not only are the themes the same, but the black and rainbow perfectly contrasts with the white and rainbow of my deck. They also both feature spot uv details for extra shine ✨ I love the energy of this deck and how it plays with The Prism Tarot.
I started collecting and reading with playing cards before Tarot, so I like to continue to incorporate them into my practice. They are great for personal readings or to use as clarifiers when a tarot reading consists of a lot of major arcana.
